Foxes have always been one of my favorite animals. One of the reasons it was love at first sight when I first saw Krammer curled up at the SPCA was because he reminded me so much of a little fox! That was even my nickname for him. Now that he’s gone, whenever I see little fox themed things I think of him! So naturally, I was head over heels for a cute little pillow with Fox’s at Anthro.
I decided for my version to hand-stamp fabric and use it to make a little pillow case for one we already had, but you could stamp a pre-made pillow case if you don’t sew or just would rather. My pillow was a little travel size one and I think it ended up being the perfect size for an “accent pillow.”
Supplies // A pillow case, or fabric to make one. Fabric paint (I used Martha Stewart AP craft paint in Acorn) . A home-made stamp
If you’ve never made a stamp before, it’s really not hard! I do suggest putting a backing on your stamp just to help keep things clean and a lot easier to handle. I know some people use plain foam for stamping, but I’ve honestly never had great luck with it.
If you don’t want to make your own stamp you could buy a pre-made one or have one made (there’s several great stamp makers on etsy). The original pillow is over $100 so even if you had a custom one made you’d still be way cheaper then the original! You just want to make sure your design doesn’t have too much detail. I’ve found that it’s a lot harder to get small details to come out when printing on fabric.
Once you have your stamp all ready to go, you can use just a regular paint brush to load your stamp up with paint. I just sort of dab it on real heavy and clean up the edges. Use some scrap fabric to try out your stamp a couple times before you start on your pillow case. Make sure you apply pressure to the whole stamp. I usually press down real hard on the whole thing and then go back and apply pressure to each individual area of the stamp.
I juse eye’d how far to spread each one apart, but if you don’t trust yourself, or just want it to be real precise, then you can just take a pencil and ruler and mark how far apart you’d like each one. Make sure to have scrap paper under your fabric or pillow case so you can have “run offs.”
I kind of love how you can actually tell it’s hand-printed. When I took a printing class my teacher always said that it’s good to see that something hand-made – it makes it more unique and one of a kind!
I actually made this for my mom who is re-doing one of the bedrooms in their house, but now I am already planning on making a few or our house too! It’d be fun to do different ones with different animals or different colors to make it interesting.
