I recently realized I haven’t shared any of the progress we’ve made on our primary bedroom. It feels like one of the biggest changes we’ve made inside the house, so I say it’s time to rectify that.
You can see what the master bedroom looked like when we first walked through the house. It was incredibly dark, with heavy blinds and curtains covering every window. The 1960’s floral wallpaper that was peeling off mostly on its own.
A year or two after we moved in Frank removed all the wallpaper. We were hoping to find just bare plaster walls that we could live with as-is for a while, but what we actually found was a little different.

The Wallpaper
Damaged, cracking, and poorly patched bright orange walls. I’m very sensitive to colors and it put me in a terrible mood to wake up those walls every morning. In order to fix it I spent weeks patching the larger cracks, and finally skim spackling all of the walls and ceiling. Followed by never ending sanding, and (finally) painting!
Honestly, I am surprised when people complain about painting. Almost all of our walls require some skim spackling and sanding, not to mention wallpaper removal. So for me painting is by far the best part of the whole process!
The Repairs
We also pulled the radiators out, gave them an over-due scrubbing, and a fresh coat of paint! It’s always so nice to see radiators come back to life after a new coat of paint. Just as a side note, I grew up in a house with forced air and had terrible breathing problems. Ever since we moved into our house and use radiators for heat I sometimes forget completely that I even have asthma. It’s been surprising to me what a difference it’s made.
I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention how I had a mental breakdown at least once during this process.Ddid you even renovate a house if you didn’t have a breakdown? The majority of this renovation was done a few years ago, and at the time I was rushing to get the room finished before someone was coming to stay with our dogs while we traveled. So I spent about 15 hours a day spackling and sanding and driving myself absolutely insane. Now I’m grateful to be able to step back and laugh about it.
Master Bedroom Makeover : The After
It went from dark and dingy, to orange and slightly scary, to finally bright and cozy. I love love love our bedroom. Is there still more to do? Of course! The most major being refinishing the floors, but since the whole house needs that we’ll be waiting until essentially all of the renovations are finished. I also would love to find a nice big rug for our room, and I’ve been trying to decide on what to hang above our bed. Overall though, it feels so good to have a space that’s come so far and I’m actually happy to wake up in.
