5 Easy Plants for your Home

Plants can be intimidating. I’ve killed my fair share of succulents after everyone swore they were “the easiest plant ever!”. Picking the right plants for your care level, light level and spot can feel overwhelming, but after a lot of trial and error I have a list of my go-to plants that are easy to care for, do well in most homes, and make you look like a total green thumb, no matter how bad you are with plants. Even if you think you’re terrible with plants I promise, there’s one out there for you.

Monstera

I used to be super intimidated by Monsteras. You’ve probably seen these gorgeous plants all over the pages of magazines and home decor books and figured they were would never work for you, just like I did, but let me tell you – you’re wrong! My absolute favorite plant, they’re actually really easy to care for, are hearty, and can do well both inside and outside (as long as it’s warm!). During the summer my monstera lives on the patio, and then I pull him inside for the winter.

Monstera’s do great in bright, indirect sunlight. During the winter I typically only need to water mine once a week, and during the summer it thrives well on mostly just rain (although I sometimes need to water if it’s been extra hot and dry out). The great thing about Monstera’s is that they tell you if something’s wrong. If I forget to water mine it’s leaves get just a little droopy and it perks right back up within a few hours of watering!

Snake Plant

A classic. Any indoor plant list is sure to feature this crazy easy to care for plant. They can do well in even low light, like our master bedroom. They are super forgiving if you forget about them for a while, and you can easily find them in a variety of sizes, making them an easy pick for almost any spot in your house.

ZZ Plant

I finally got one of these magic guys this year and love mine! They’re so easy that the one thing you actually need to be careful of is overwatering. For some reason I never seem to be able to keep succulents alive, I have a tendency to over-water them, but this guy is easy. I actually did overwater it a bit, but as soon as I realized my mistake I backed off and gave it plenty of time to dry out and it was totally fine. Not only are they crazy easy to care for, but they even do well in really low light, making them the perfect pic for those darker corners that need a little life!

Of course, there’s other great and easy houseplants, but these are some of my favorites that I feel like really also take a room up a notch when decorating. Most vines are typically good options too, and can add a little drama if you hang them (Swiss Cheese Vines are my new favorite!) . I’ve also had good like with Pilea’s, although they are tiny bit more finicky and I have to keep more of an eye on them.

Most people make the mistake of buying a plant and then trying to find a spot for it, but the best advice I can give when picking out plants for your home, is to decide what spot you want a plant in, and then find a plant that will do well there. It’ll save you a lot of heartache, and avoid an unhappy plant situation!

Birds of Paradise

Another show-stopping plant you probably steered clear of if you’re intimidated by plants. This tropical beaut is way heartier than you might think. Mine lives a similar life to my Monstera, moving outside for the summer and inside for the winter. It’s typically drought resistant, and I rarely need to water mine during the summer when it can collect rain. I typically water mine once a week during the winter, but it’s pretty forgiving when I forget.
