One Room Challenge | The Office Before
So technically this room was already “redone”. It was one of the first rooms we did after we moved in and it felt nice to have one small space that wasn’t covered in grimy old wallpaper. The thing is, we had no real plans for this room. It was the “sewing room” for many years, simply because the sewing machine lived in there, not because there was actually much sewing going on. In reality, it was mostly a catch all for whatever random crap we needed a spot for while we redid other spaces.
This winter I changed jobs and now have the opportunity to work from home a lot more (and now full-time with all this craziness). We realized quickly that if Frank was home at the same time and working on his own things, or doing construction, it could be distracting for both of us. So this little room finally has a purpose – my office!
But let’s rewind all the way back to how it looked when we first walked through the house…
Lot’s of wallpaper. Even the outlet covers and light switches were wallpapered. The ceiling was popcorned and falling off in bits. So I scraped wallpaper, frank scrapped the popcorn ceiling, and I skim spackled pretty much the entire room.
I really debated over what color to paint. I knew I wanted to do most of the house in light neutrals so part of me wanted to be brave and actually do a color and settled on a deep blue. So I painted and we called it a day.
I’ll be honest, the color never felt quite right to me, but since we weren’t really using that room much I just moved on. It actually is a lovely color, but it’s a fairly small room, so such a strong, dark color made it feel even smaller. It wasn’t until I started using it as an office I really felt the walls closing in. I won’t lie, when Frank was doing some work on the closet and some of the wall plaster got damaged I was maybe a little too excited for a good excuse to repaint.
I saw the One Room Challenge coming up and thought it was the perfect excuse to fully transition this little space into a real office! So for the next few weeks I’ll be sharing different bits of the transformation each week. Originally, the One Room Challenge was supposed to take place during the month of April, but due to Coronavirus, it go pushed back, so you may have already seen some of my sneak peaks on my Instagram since I’ve spending many of my isolation weekends working on it!
Check back in each Thursday to see the updates!
