I typically don’t consider myself “farmhouse” decorator, but I won’t lie – I love Joanna Gaines as much as the next gal. We added shiplap to our sunroom, so it feels like parts of our home are indeed mixing a little bit of modern farmhouse in with our boho vibes (should we call it “Boho Farm” or “Foho”?). I’ve gotten a few questions lately from people asking how to mix both styles to get a just right Boho Farmhouse Decor Look.

Boho Farmhouse decor strives to marry the two styles in a balanced way. Here are a few tips on how to mix the two for a more blended style.

If you’ve recently purchased or started renting a space that was designed heavily farmhouse style, these could be good options for bringing something different to the space too!

Boho Farmhouse Color Palette

One of the great shared features of both farmhouse and boho decor styles is white walls! Both styles thrive off of a clean slate to build from. Going with a nice warm white (like Alabaster from Sherwin Williams) gives you a good slate without it feeling too sterile. Light grays and soft tans are other colors that can be a nice cross over and used in both styles.

When it comes to flooring, sticking with a lighter blonde wood is the more boho choice. To add in more of the farmhouse feel, you could go with rustic inspired warm wood tones, or even a slate. If you already have darker floors, look to bring in a lighter more boho inspired rug to balance things out.

Boho Farmhouse Decor Details

It’s often the little details that are the ones that can set the style. Black hardware and wood finishes lean towards a farmhouse look. While brass hardware, marble, and terrazzo finishes can feel more boho.

If you’re looking to refresh a space without completely re-doing it, see what finishes you could swap out for an easy style change. Already have butcher block countertops? Considermore brass or gold hardware to bring in that boho touch. Marble or granite? consider black details to add farmhouse details.

For smaller decor touches use a wood tray to show off a brass or gold candle, a black canister, and wood beads for a mix of both styles.

Boho Farmhouse Light Fixtures

Light fixtures can also influence a style and are often an easy swap. If you went with more of the farmhouse finishes, like black hardware and butcher block countertops, you might go with a more boho-inspired light fixture, like a woven hanging pendant.

This is often a good way to tweak a rented home or space as well, since changing out a pendant or light cover is typically an easy swap. You can even just bring in more independent light fixtures like lamps without any trouble.

Quick Guide to Get the Look

Always start with pieces you love, especially when it comes to the big investment pieces. Once you chose some of those big pieces, take a step back and see what style they lean towards. Use accent pieces to balance things out.

If you go with a really boho inspired couch, opt for more farmhouse style coffee tables or accent chairs. In the end, have fun and worry more about loving your space and less about fitting into any particular style!

Here’s a quick and very broad breakdown of some finishes and details from each style. Both styles have a lot more to them then these points. This list is just meant to be a broad jumping off point. Mix and match from both lists to achieve the boho farmhouse balance you may be looking for:
