Adding Color & Whimsy to a Neutral Bedroom: Primary Bedroom Refresh

Our primary bedroom has been feeling beyond bland the last few years. Like with most spaces over time, we’ve moved and swapped things without stopping to really give thought to how all these little changes were working together (or in this case, not working together).

Earlier this year I decided it was time to finally give it a little refresh! Of course, we were also in the middle of finishing a major bathroom renovation, so I didn’t want to spend too much extra time on this project. The goal was simple: a room refresh in a weekend. That meant no paint. I’ve painted this room before and know it would take the entire weekend just to re-paint it. So I focused my energy on all of the other elements, bringing in as much color and texture with the other elements since we were keeping the neutral wall color.

There were three major things I swapped out : The rug, the bedding, and the curtains.

The previous rug was a white shag, and while it was cozy and nice on my feet when I first got it, over time it became matted and nearly impossible to keep truly clean. Plus, it was just white – pretty boring! So I swapped it for this fun patterned Ruggable. I am absolutely obsessed with it! I love the florals and the birds and it brings so much color and whimsy into the space. Not to mention it’s so much easier to clean!

For the bedding, I knew I wanted to change back to a comforter. We’ve had a quilt the last few years and I found myself really missing the coziness of a comforter. I also wanted something with a lot more pattern. This Laura Ashley set was exactly what I needed. I love the little ruffle detail along the edges, and getting a bed skirt really elevated the whole look of the bed.

I’d been struggling with curtains for the last few years. I had tried several different styles and always ended up hating them. White looked nice, but with already neutral walls, felt so boring. I came across these blue gingham curtains and absolutely fell in love. They’re so charming and add both color and pattern to the space, helping to break up those big beige walls.

In addition to the big changes, I also made a few smaller ones. I finally found a set of matching night stands and gave them their own quick makeover – painting them a soft light green and adding a few hand-painted details.

I also added a lot more art! I had been struggling with art for this room before, but now that everything else was coming together it felt so much more natural to add more art. Most of the pieces I found at the thrift store, but I also printed out a few personal photos to add to the mix.

It can often feel overwhelming when a space just isn’t working. It may seem like you have to start from scratch, re-paint, buy all new furniture and totally rearrange it to get it feeling good again, but often it just takes a few smart swaps to completely change the feeling of a room.

Personally, I am so happy with how this room came out, and I think Dutch likes it too πŸ™‚
